James Bryner BA, RN, CEN is a Flight Nurse for us and was born and raised in California where he obtained a Bachelors degree in psychology from the University of California at Santa Cruz. Seeking a way to help people in a more direct, hands-on fashion, he went back to school and received his nursing degree in 1988 from Cabrillo Community College in Aptos, CA.

James has worked in many different hospital Emergency Departments locally including Skagit Valley, Virginia Mason, and here on island at the IIMC. He is currently working in Anacortes at Island Hospital where he received his CEN earlier this year. Most memorable was his stint for almost a year in Kauai, HI at Wilcox Memorial Hospital ER. He still misses going surfing or for a swim just before going to work!

James’ first love is his beautiful wife Sheryl (and her two awesome sons) whom he met while here at San Juan EMS during an EMT class. His other passion is cycling and has toured large parts of western Europe and even larger parts of SE Asia.

Our island home lost a beloved family member, treasured friend, and caring advocate when Michael Roger
succumbed to lymphoma on Thursday evening, October 20, 2011. He was in the care of Hospice House in
Bellingham, where family and friends were close by his side during his brief stay.

Michael spent his professional career defending the rights of employees as a labor attorney in his firm of
Weinberg, Roger & Rosenfeld in Alameda, California. He and his wife Gail purchased their house
in Roche Harbor in 2001 and became fulltime residents in their new chosen home when Michael retired in 2005. But
professional retirement did not slow Michael down, as he continued his advocacy role in many volunteer activities and elected office.

As a Hospital District Board Commissioner, Michael worked tirelessly with San Juan Island EMS and the Inter Island Medical Center to
ensure the strength and viability of ongoing operations at both facilities.

As member of the San Juan Community Hospital Committee and the PIMC Steering Committee, Michael
helped guide the process of forging a partnership with PeaceHealth to bring a critical access hospital to our island community.

As Chair of the County’s Citizens Salary Commission, Michael worked to ensure equitable remuneration for elected officials of San Juan
County.

As Treasurer of the InterIsland Healthcare Foundation, Michael helped to oversee fundraising efforts for Inter Island Medical Center and San Juan Island EMS.

As Treasurer of the Board of Homes for Islanders, Michael worked to provide housing and housing assistance to island residents in need. He also served as Treasurer of the Roche Harbor Road Association.

But even more important…..

As a friend, Michael provoked stimulating and challenging exchanges, provided welcomed counsel, reveled in watching dogs at play (Maddy and all her friends), and loved sharing good stories and laughter over a plate of good food and a glass of good wine.

As a father and grandfather, Michael created cherished memories for his family, whether through travels to destinations from Hawaii to New York, or amazing restaurant dining experiences, or just doing battle over a mean game of poker or a board game.

As a husband, Michael shared a life with Gail that was filled with shared family times, varied interests, travel adventures, warm companionship, deep love and great joy.

Michael will be greatly missed by all whose lives he touched.

————————————————————————

Special memories of Michael can be shared at a gathering of friends, neighbors, and family on Wednesday, November 2, 5:00-7:00 pm, at Duck Soup Inn on Roche Harbor Road.

Commemorative gifts can be directed to the San Juan Island Community Foundation (PO Box 1352), noting that the gift is in support of Peace Island Medical Center — or to Homes for Islanders (PO Box 545).

It’s Safety Fair Time! Games, a coloring contest, a rescue demonstration, food and lots of fun are on the agenda at the Safety Fair from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 9, at the Mullis Street Fire Station. Participating agencies include the San Juan Island Fire Department, San Juan Island Emergency Medical Services, the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office, Firewise and the Red Cross.

Kids’ games include a bean bag toss, 911 twister, shooting the flames with a real fire hose and more. Participants may also use a fire extinguisher to put out a real fire.

A rescue demonstration will be held at noon when emergency workers demonstrate how they operate at the scene of a motor vehicle accident. EMS will use the Jaws-of-Life to cut up a vehicle and will show how efficient a child safety seat is in protecting a child in an accident.

EMS will also provide information about child safety seats and will make arrangements to check anyone’s car seat.

Kids will able to sit in the fire engines, dress in firefighter gear and tour the fire station.

There will also be a coloring contest with prizes for children preschool age through grade 5. Entries must be turned in by 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 9, at the Mullis Street Station. Winners will be announced at 2 p.m. The coloring page will be passed out at the
schools during fire prevention week or you may pick them up at the Mullis Street Fire Station.

Emergency workers will also cook a hotdog of your choice – beef, turkey or tofu. Other free goodies include chips, cookies, soda pop and juices.

The Safety Fair is held during Fire Prevention Week each year as a reminder to people about fire safety, in addition to safety and emergency preparedness in general. The 2011 Fire Prevention Week (Oct. 9-15) theme this year is “Protect Your Family From Fire”

Fires can strike anywhere – in buildings, automobiles, and the outdoors – but fire that affect our homes are often the most tragic and most preventable. Over 75 percent of all fire fatalities occur in home fires. You can protect your family by:

Installing smoke alarms on every level of your home.

Testing smoke alarms once a month.

Changing smoke alarm batteries at least once a year,

Making and practicing a home fire escape plan.

For more information about home fire escape plans or other fire safety, please call the San Juan Island Fire Department at 378-5334.

If district residents need medial evacuation from the island aboard Island Air Ambulance, there is ZERO out of pocket expense, because residents have already paid their taxes. Only their applicable insurance will be billed. For visitors to the island, we will work with you to bill your insurance, should you have an event that necessitates your med evac.

Stay safe, drive sober, and enjoy a wonderful and fun-filled summer in the San Juans!
