Every 15 Minutes

Dear Mom and Dad, every fifteen minutes someone in the United States dies from an alcohol related traffic collision, and today I died. I never had the chance to tell you…….”

e15m-poster1Every 3 years we offer an anti-drinking and driving program called “Every 15 Minutes” which is an experiential high-impact and community involving program aimed at helping high school students resist the pressures to drink and drive.

The Every 15 Minutes Program offers real-life experience without the real-life risks. This emotionally charged program is an event designed to dramatically instill teenagers with the potentially dangerous consequences of drinking alcohol. This powerful program will challenge students to think about drinking, personal safety, and the responsibility of making mature decisions when lives are involved.

Nationally one person dies every fifteen minutes in a drug or alcohol related auto accident. The number one cause of death for youth is trauma, most commonly in traffic related incidents. Of the local fatalities from motor vehicle collisions (MVCs) 80% involve alcohol. In order to help reduce these numbers we hope to educate the public regarding the consequences and outcomes of such behavior. Every 15 Minutes intends to bring about greater understanding for all by bringing together much of the community to participate in demonstrating and experiencing these situations in a safe and protected manner. It builds on programs that currently exist in our area, such as DUI drills and the Prevention Coalition (a local group dealing with teens and alcohol use/abuse).

This program is funded almost entirely through the donations of concerned citizens, grants, and safety partners.

Life’s lessons are best learned through experience. Unfortunately, when the target audience is teens and the topic is drinking and driving, experience is not the teacher of choice.
