We welcome you to the San Juan Islands! As an honored guest, we want you to feel at home here and have a very enjoyable experience.
We know that you may have some health concerns about coming to such a remote place. We’re here to serve you should an emergency arise. We have a robust advanced life support agency with many transportation options available should you need to get to a hospital on the mainland.
Our local medical clinic, Inter-Island Medical Center is a Level 5 Trauma facility with x-ray and lab capabilities. Simple fractures and lacerations can be diagnosed and treated. The laboratory can run basic blood work including your clotting times and heart enzymes. A physician and nurse are on call 24 hours a day, even when the clinic is closed in the evening and on the weekends. A regular pharmacy is available in the Town of Friday Harbor and there your prescription and over-the-counter health care needs can be met.
Should you need transportation to the mainland, patients will generally be flown aboard Airlift Northwest medical helicopters to the hospital that can best care for your needs. Our very own fixed wing Island Air Ambulance is also an option when the helicopters are unavailable or it is more appropriate to transfer you and a family member aboard a fixed wing medical plane.
Prevention is the strongest weapon against accidents and illnesses. Come prepared with a list of your medications and medical history. Be sure to include whom to call in an emergency, as well as the name and number of your primary care physician.
We trust that you will have a hassle free and rewarding visit to the islands. But in the event of an unlikely emergency, we’re here for you.
