John Volk
John died unexpectedly. Monday, December 11, 2006. He was 62. John had been with San Juan Island EMS since 1992 as an EMT. He was EMT of the Year in 1994 and received the Chief’s Award in 2004, along with his wife Lainey.
John had a long list of service careers. As a young man he joined the US Navy CBs and then served in Vietnam as an electrician. He worked 10 years for the California Hwy Patrol. He created a garage door manufacturing business in California, which he eventually sold to settle in the San Juan’s. John had also been part of the San Juan Fire District and Dive rescue team in past years.
He was president of the local pilots’ group, The San Juan Eagles. The Eagles pilots fly cancer patients to their mainland appointments/treatments, donating their planes and enormous amounts of time in the process.
He will be greatly missed by his wife Lainey, his family, his many friends and fellow EMTs.
