FLIGHT NURSE
JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Critical Care Transport Nurse CCTRN provides high quality pre-hospital advanced life support including assessment, triage, and treatment utilizing standards and guidelines established by Island Air Ambulance/ San Juan Island EMS Chief, Director of Critical Care, and the Medical Director(s) within scope of practice. The CCTRN assesses the nature and extent of illness and injury to establish and prioritize care needed for safe transport of all categories of patients from critical to non-critical to the appropriate facility working in collaboration with other care providers. The CCTRN is qualified to provide care for patients across the life-span in assigned clinical area. He/she is responsible for carrying out the mission, vision and values of San Juan Island EMS. The CCTRN will care for patients in a variety of transport modalities including but not limited to; fixed wing air ambulance, traditional ground ambulance and marine response units provided by other municipal agencies. The CCTRN will assure that safety remains the highest priority throughout the transport continuum and will assure the transport medical equipment is mission ready; that equipment, supplies, and medications are organized in a manner conducive to patient care.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- 12 clinical shifts per month with daily on premises staffing between the hours of 8am to 6 pm with a 5 minute response time
- On call between the hours of 6pm and 8am with a 10 minute response time (subject to change due to weather and operational demand)
- Up to 48 hours of administrative time to be completed each month (those hours can be completed while on shift)
- Provides nursing care from the initial contact until patient care is relinquished to the accepting medical facility, or other agency; maintains thorough patient care documentation.
- Provides educational programing for the flight EMS and Ground EMS operations at the ALS level directed by the Director of Critical Care Transport
- Practices nursing within his/her scope of practice as defined by the state statutes, regulations, and established San Juan Island EMS protocols.
- Maintains competency in knowledge and psychomotor skills by participation in ongoing laboratory and clinical experiences. Communicates educational needs to the Director of Critical Care.
- Maintains documentation of required licensure, certifications, continuing education, aviation and safety training, and advanced procedures.
- Attends continuing education programs including OTEP, ALS provider CE.
- Knowledgeable in use and routine maintenance of all equipment and supplies used by San Juan Island EMS. Responsible for reporting medical equipment failures and taking initial steps to insure repair of equipment as directed. Maintains adequate supplies onboard aircraft to deliver patient care. Keeps aircraft or other transport vehicle clean and orderly to insure rapid response to all transport requests.
- Completes and documents; Start of rotation check off sheet: medications, jump bags, monitors, suction, etc., and first day of the month outdate checks.
- Maintains positive interpersonal relationships with colleagues, other EMS collaborative practitioners, hospitals, and the public.
- This position reports to the Director and is responsible to supervise but more importantly serves as a role model to Flight EMTs, and inspires a strong bond between other peer RNs and Paramedic collaborative practitioners.
- Attends pre-mission briefings and mission debriefings and completes necessary documentation as directed by the Director of Critical Care. Also, attends aircraft safety briefings as directed by Island Air Inc. Chief Pilot/Administration.
- Assists in pre-mission liftoff checklist and assists pilot as requested, I.e., radio, navigational, and visual observation activities. Complies with safety standards to assure safety of self, medical personnel, patient, and equipment.
- Assists with preparations for marine response as needed to complete critical care missions
- Performs advanced skills and procedures as approved by the Director of Critical Care, Medical Director, and EMS Commissioners.
- Attends and participates in meetings according to established departmental guidelines.
- Participates in departmental quality improvement activities, undertakes and maintains
projects and other duties as assigned.
- Acts as a team leader by instilling a positive attitude at all times towards all involved in pre, interim, and post flight of a patient(s).
- Assist in new employee orientation and serves as a preceptor and role model to flight EMT.
- Maintains and exceeds uniform grooming and safety gear standards.
- Completes all patient care, San Juan Island EMS forms, and complies with HIPPA regulations in a timely, complete, and accurate fashion.
QUALIFICATIONS

Required Education:
Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.
Required Experience:
Minimum 4 years critical care/emergency nursing experience.
CEN
License & Certificates:
Current RN license(s) for state of Washington required by state regulations.
Current certifications in; BLS/CPR, ACLS, NRP, TNCC and PALS or equivalent.
Specialty flight certification (CFRN) required within one year of hire.
State of Washington Paramedic License within 1 year of hire
National Registry Paramedic within 2 years of hire
Preferred Education:
BSN or Bachelor’s degree in health-related field.
TNATC or ATLS audit, ENPC
ACLS, PALS, and/ or NRP instructor certification
Preferred Experience:
Pre-hospital Provider experience/ Flight experience.
WORKING CONDITIONS
SJI EMS/IAA operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and all holidays, requiring the CCTRN to work rotating or multiple shifts, non-traditional hours, and may require short turnarounds. The CCTRN is constantly placed in stressful situations requiring him/her to be aware of the ever-changing situations associated with field work including but not limited to: adverse weather conditions, hazardous material exposure, loud noises, dealing with confused and agitated patients, exposure to unknown diseases and working in restricted area. The CCTRN must be able to walk, stoop, climb, twist, bend, run, sit, squat, kneel, and work in awkward positions when moving patients from all types of locations and within the ambulance/aircraft. CCTRNs must also be able to lift patients from the ground into the ambulance/aircraft with minimal assistance. CCTRNs carry a great deal of responsibility to the public and through this agency will be held to the highest moral and ethical standards.
